Ultra Super Secret Squirrel camp in Red River Gorge

This Saturday 14 July 2018 Landon and I left the house at 0400 to meet Jason at his house at 0500. We then left for Red River Gorge to meet Jason from Backpacking With Jason. When Jason arrived we headed into the woods. We started on a known and managed trail for some time and switched to another before melting away into the bush. The hike to the sites are not marked and have no distinguished trail. Actual navigation must be done to get there. The terrain is slightly ruff and time consuming when you haven’t been there many times before. The humidity was pretty high and the temperature raised quickly.

When we arrived at the third and last camp it was noticeably cooler there with just a little breeze. This was very nice after the long hike. The area had been cleared and very comfortable with tables made from local resources.

We talked with Jason for a few hours before he decided to go. It was a fun time. Shortly after Jason left we realized how early it really was so cached our gear, not that it was really needed and headed back to the car. We stopped at the store for some snacks and parked at Koomer Ridge to give us different hike. On that hike we ran into the first copperhead I had seen. Jason and I walked right past it only inches off the trail. Landons quick eye caught it and was able to steer clear of it. We didn’t see anymore the rest of the trip.

We arrived back at camp and began setting up our shelters and then fixed our dinner. The afternoon and night were quiet and comfortable letting us relax. Landon started a fire and had a very hard time keeping it going but was able to have a decent fire for the time we were awake helping keep the bugs away.

The night cooled down only slightly but was comfortable to sleep. I slept pretty bad as my pillow sucks and was using my top quilt for awhile and I was not able to keep my neck and back in a good alinement. I woke a few time in the night as I always do anyway and it was purely quiet. I finally got up around 0630 with Jason soon after.

We started breakfast and struck camp fairly quickly and soon headed out. On the way out we had the bright idea to try a different way out and were met with a unclimbable cliff forcing us to return another way. The hike out was tough as it mostly was up hill and it was already hot and humid.

The ride home was uneventful while Landon slept the majority of the way to Jasons. Where he promptly forgot the ale8 in the backseat of the car.

Another trip down with lots of video and photos to edit and post. Please check out some of my photos on this page: ultra-super-secret-squirrel-camp-red-river-gorge
